Request for Ordinance Prohibitir.g Women Bartenders
Mr. Carter Smyth appeared before the Commission and stated he represented the bar-
tender's union And that permlts to work had been given to women to tend bar to meet an
emergency. He stated that as the emergency no longer exists, the permits have been
"pulled" by the union and the employers notified; he said, however, th'-t one party re-
fuses to get off the job and let a union man take this work. The Bartender's Union was,
therefore, asking the City to pass an ordinance similar to the Billings Ordinance, pro-
hibiting women from tending bar. He explained that the union was asking the City to do
this to prevent a union fight; and the neces s i ty of declaring a pla ce unfair to organized
labor and which would put men out of work.
He stated further that ex-service men were available for this type of work, and the
union was interested in obtaining work for such of these men as want to learn this craft.
Mr. Chas. Adams, of the Baxter Hotel, was present and remarked that he was willing
to employ another bartender in place of the woman noW employed at his place of business
if the union could furnish him with a man whom he felt would be qualified to do the work;
he said that he was now holding one shift for a service man and that he could have the
job if he wanted it as soon as he returned.
The Commissioners stated th8t they felt, this was a matter which should be decided
