Dear Mayor Taylor,
This letter is to invite you to participate in the feedback period of the sixth edition of the
Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index (MEI).The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is
the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender and queer (LGBTQ) Americans. The MEI is an annual nationwide evaluation of
municipal laws, policies, and services affecting the LGBTQ community.
HRC has conducted preliminary research on each of the 506 cities selected for rating. We would
now like to extend the opportunity to cities to verify our research. We compiled the information
on the scorecard based on publicly available resources. If we have missed anything or are in
error, please let us know so that we can fix it. Please note that this year, we are deducting
partial credit for nondiscrimination ordinances with religious exemptions that allow
discrimination against the LGBTQ community.
We have enclosed your city's draft scorecard with this letter.As a reminder, all draft scores
and scorecards are for internal review and feedback purposes only,and should be kept strictly
confidential. All scores are not final and are subject to change until the MEI is published and
officially released.
If you have any corrections to make to your city's scorecard, please contact us by email at
mei@hrc.org. We are also happy to answer questions about the scoring process or how your
city may improve its score before the 2017 MEI is published. In order for us to incorporate your
feedback into the final publication, we ask that we receive your revisions by July 21, 2017.
Please be sure to include documentation for any portion of the score which you would like to be
amended.
