Dear Commissioners,
RE the STR proposal: I urge you to grandfather in the existing code-compliant STRs. Please be guided by
the dozens of people who spoke in support of this at the May 22 meeting.
I was impressed by these speakers, who included long-time neighbors of STRs, STR owners, owners and
employees of two long-time exemplary STR businesses, and representatives of the MT Landlords Assn. The
relatively few people speaking against STRs in general had concerns that about things that are equally potential
problems with long-term renters and home owner neighbors, and any quality of life complaints should be
treated on an equal footing. I am certain that the same people, facing unruly or clueless long-term renters would
not find that preferable.
IF their are STR owners who face repeated complaints, they can be brought into line by the threat of the city
reviewing their license. These owners will need to learn to be very clear and strict with instructions to their
renters, and personally check on them or employ someone to do so, and provide a number for concerned
adjacent neighbors to call at any time.
The can of worms the city faces (including lawsuits) is a significant downside to acting on the concerns of a
very few people without absolutely quantifiable figures and facts, which simply are not there. Numerous
speakers at the May 22nd meeting made this clear, as well as the quite small percentage of STRs, even
including the ones that are not code-compliant.
I attended the May 22 meeting, and spoke, and am out of town this week and cannot attend tonight. I feel it
would be a mistake to act on the proposed regulations as they stand, without AT LEAST grandfathering in
existing code-compliant STRs.
Cordially, Clara Pincus
