Tenth Man for Fire Department The Manager reported he has been informed by John McCrosson that he expects to return to his duties as Fire Chief on January 1, 1952. During John McCrosson's illness and recuperation since April, 1951, William Johnson has been employed as a fireman. It has been recommended by Chief McCrosson and Assist- ant Chief Fenttila that Johnson be retained as an additional member of the F'ire Department when Chief McCrosson returns to duty. This would make a total of ten paid members of the Fire Department and it is recommended that by having this tenth man, it would be unnecessary to hire an extra man during times when regular firemen are on vacation or absent on account of illness. The Commission expressed their unanimous approval of this recommendation. Farking on South Grand at N orthe rn Auto Co. Charles Turner, Manager of the Northern Auto Company, met with the Commission to discuss the park- ing problem on South Grand Avenue at the Northern Auto Company building. There is a recess space thir- teen feet in depth along this building where cars park while awaiting entrance into the Northern Auto Company's shops and completely block the sidewalk. This has been a problem for many years and no work- able solution has been found for it. The City Manager had informed the Northern Auto Company that he was instructing the folice Department to issue summons to each and every car driver parking on this space and blocking the sidewalk. Mr. Turner informed the Commission that he would take this matter up with Mayo -Story Dean, owner of the building, at once and attempt to get the wall of the building moved out to the sidewalk line to eliminate this condition. It was agreed that action in the matter would be delayed until Mr. Turner can report on the possibility of rebuilding this wall.
