Dear Mayor Taylor and the Bozeman City Commission,
Please reconsider the size and style of The Black Olive building. It is just too
large for the neighborhood. There are so many problems that are coming to light
regarding this project. I believe that it is an ill-conceived plan that will erode
the character and walkability of this area.
As a long time resident and worker in downtown, I have first hand knowledge of
the difficulties faced biking in town, and especially on Olive Street as well as the
difficulties faced walking sidewalks that are poorly maintained in the winter. To
suggest that this city can turn into a walking/biking community for families,
elders and people with infirmities is unrealistic at this point. Soon, there will be
0 grocery store and drug store options within walking or biking distance of the
Black Olive project.
I was dismayed to hear at the last meeting that metal siding is proposed for the
west side. Over and over again, citizens have expressed concern about glare
issues, so I am surprised that the developer chose to go with this option. It does
not seem that they are taking the citizens comments seriously. Adding outdoor
seating which would require supplemental heating is not a very creative or
efficient way to build and seem to be poorly thought out. 6 covered bike parking
slots is woefully inadequate to encourage biking in the winter. I was also
surprised that a parking slot was not included in the rent. I can imagine more
cars on the street than anticipated with this opt-out.
I support growth that benefits everyone - not just the developers. There are
many creative solutions to manage growth in our city. Please take the time to
slow down all construction and take a hard look at whether 5 story buildings are
in the best interest of preserving and maintaining the core aesthetic of
downtown Bozeman.
Thank you for all the hard work that you do to keep Bozeman vibrant and
thriving!
Regards,
Cynthia Barnes
