Message: Comment on the Black and Olive Street Shared-ride proposal: I think it is a bold
initiative for the city to support a shared-car concept and one which should be supported.
Planning efforts to put more people and less cars downtown will be rewarding but getting there
will be painful and parking will be a key challenge. However, shared riding will never happen if
some level of pain is not experienced. If we constantly cater to the automobile, we will have
more paving, less viable commercial space and a less vibrant downtown. Congestion is
inevitable and this experiment is worth pursuing. At the same time, we need to respect
neighboring residential space, aesthetics of the building and other factors that may be more of a
design nature than parking. Whether the Black and Olive project is the right one for pushing a
shared-car concept, I think the city needs to seriously consider the concept as the downtown
density and vibrancy evolves.
