03-07-17 Correspondence - E. Ross to Mayor et al - Invitation to the 42nd Annual American Indian Council Pow Wow
V M i'i MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY Mayor Carson Taylor, Deputy Mayor Cynthia Andrus, and mayoral staff& families, You are cordially invited to the 42nd Annual American Indian Council Pow Wow, at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse of Montana State University,April 14th and 15th, 2017,presented by the American Indian Council,to celebrate Native American heritage, culture, and diversity. In addition to the Pow Wow, the American Indian Council has arranged family-friendly events throughout Friday and Saturday across the Bozeman campus, detailed in the enclosed brochure that includes a community prayer, Indigenous Film Festival, 5K Fun Run, Alumni Breakfast, and Easter Egg Hunt. As a supportive MSU organization, the Society of American Indian Graduate Students (SAIGS) in conjunction with the American Indian Council(AIC),both academic groups that represent over 600 of our Native American cohorts at MSU, expressly encourage members of the Bozeman community to join us and thousands of other spectators to witness and enjoy this outstanding two-day cultural event at no admission charge. As the largest college Pow Wow in the Pacific Northwest we are proud to feature Grammy Award Nominees and performers, Northern Cree, as Host-Diem. It is not uncommon for us to hear that local Bozemanites are unaware that they could attend this public event. In light of this and recent political changes, MSU's Department of Native American Studies and their student groups feel that now, more than ever, community involvement in cross-cultural events strengthens our alliances with other Bozeman minorities. Recently, the political climate has lead to outward displays of hostility towards many minority groups. Like you, students at MSU value kindness, promote unity, honor diversity, and encourage solidarity, particularly for the most vulnerable members of our community. Most importantly, we understand that forming solidarity and support begins in our own neighborhood. It would be our honor to host you and your community during the weekends multi-event celebration. During the Pow Wow, SAIGS members will be available, at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse south entrance to answer any general questions about the Pow Wow or Native American culture. Graduate student members of SAIGS will also be identifiable by our matching t-shirts and naimetags so that we may address any questions you have. Additionally, the I I I AIC offers an extensive Pow Wow program as an event fundraiser, which details the schedule of events, offers biographies of participants, and provides educational information about the Pow Wow, including history, contest rules and regulations, and general Montana-Native information. However, should questions arise prior to the event, you may contact Pow Wow Co-Advisors: Richard White (406)994-4880, Francine Spang-Willis (406)994-5529, hoanna Carjuzaa (406)994-4941.
