I am resubmitting my letter to the Commission in opposition to a conditional use permit for a full liquor license for The
Taproom. I will be out of the country on March 27th and will not be available to speak to you personally at the meeting.
As a Bozeman community member, I am concerned about the negative impact a bar serving hard alcohol during school
hours across the street from an elementary school will have. I expect the Bozeman School District and City
Commissioners to provide a safe learning environment for all Bozeman kids. Allowing a bar to serve hard alcohol during
school hours within 100 feet and visible from classroom windows is unacceptable. Please deny the Taproom's request to
the City for a conditional use permit for a full beverage license. Given the extremely close proximity and high visibility to
the school, it is an unsuitable location for such a license.
In addition, when the Taproom was originally permitted to build across from Hawthorne School, I was not opposed it. I
wrongly assumed that the bar would not be open the same hours the school is in session. I assumed wrongly. This fall I
drove by on Mendenhall and had the very unpleasant experience of seeing up men's shorts who were sitting on the roof
deck drinking beer -- directly across from classroom windows while school was in session.
I am suggesting that not only the Taproom be denied a full liquor license, it also have its hours restricted to when the
elementary school is closed. The alcohol dependency in Montana and in the United States is well-documented. Why is
the City condoning (perhaps even championing) alcohol consumption less than 100 feet from children ages 5 - 12 while at
school?
Thank you in advance for prohibiting the sale of hard alcohol at the Taproom and reconsidering the hours that the
Taproom can serve beer and wine.
