Dear City Commission Members,
Please vote no on the Black Olive proposal as submitted.
I am concerned about the following issues:
They were asked twice by the Design Review Board to make adjustments to the
site plan in response to citizen’s comments which they chose to ignore. This is
indicative of their unwillingness to work with the citizens of Bozeman to manage
smart growth in our city.
The proposed building is a large box with a flat roof that is significantly out of
scale with the surrounding buildings. It significantly erodes the historic
character of downtown Bozeman. The increase in light and noise pollution
impacts the property values for the surrounding homes.
Their choice to add balconies on the north side to satisfy the “green space”
requirement does nothing to add to the character and charm of a walkable
downtown.
There are many examples of multi-unit and clustered housing types units that blend
well into single family home neighborhoods. By ignoring existing established
architectural styles, they are opening the door to large box-style projects which create
issues over time that the city will have to fund to correct, such as traffic congestion,
lack of parking, and increased crime due to overcrowding.
http://missingmiddlehousing.com/ is an excellent website that addresses the demand
for walkable urban living. Missing Middle is a range of multi-unit or clustered
housing types compatible in scale with single-family homes that help meet
the growing demand for walkable urban living.
