HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-09-17 Public Comment - P. Martin - SanctuaryMr. Mayor and the City Council of Bozeman
Here's the deal: I am a resident of California aka "Let's be a sanctuary state". I am in the process of
purchasing a home in Bozeman. Today, I read an article about a proposal to make my new residence a
sanctuary city. I can't contain my enormous displeasure over this notion.
Let's take a step back. Both of my parents are immigrants who came to America legally. I am a first
generation American and am proud of that. I am all for immigrants coming to America and following
the legal path to citizenship just like my parents did.
As a California resident, I am keenly aware of the great divide between my current state's political
views vs the President and his administration. I am also aware that if California becomes a sanctuary
state, it is poised to lose federal funding, which, in turn, means that I will eventually be paying more
taxes.
Bottom line: I'm not going to leave the soon-to-be sanctuary state of California for the sanctuary city
of Bozeman. It makes no fiscal sense to me. As a business owner, I ask you to consider what the
impact of becoming a sanctuary city will have on Bozeman's businesses and their employees. If
Bozeman flips to becoming a sanctuary city, I will withdraw my financial stake in my new home and
look elsewhere. Please don't let Bozeman become another California where you have to tax everyone
to make up the shortfalls caused by the withdrawal of federal (and possibly state) funding.
This is purely a matter of DOLLARS and SENSE.
Thank you.
