HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-09-17 Public Comment - D. Martin - SanctuaryTo Whom It May Concern, Just yesterday, I signed an offer to purchase a home in Bozeman. Today I am reading articles about the proposal to make Bozeman a sanctuary city. As a resident of California I am aware of what that means. As a first generation American, I am all for our country’s open arms to all immigrants. However, I don’t want to leave one state only to face the same issues in Bozeman. I speak from a fiscal point of view when I say that sanctuary cities are not good for anyone. The impact to the taxpayers, especially if federal funding is taken from sanctuary cities, is enormous. Not everyone in California is a movie star who can afford the burden. That is why we have no middle class here. If a person is not either at the poverty level eligible for state assistance, or rich enough to afford paying high state taxes, California is unaffordable. There is no sanctuary for us to be able to work hard and get ahead. I ask you to consider the impact on the citizens and businesses of Bozeman. Are they willing to pay the bill? I am not. I will keep an eye on this and if Bozeman becomes a sanctuary city I will be forced, for purely economic reasons, to withdraw my offer. Now that may or may not matter to anyone now, but believe me, it will matter in the long run. I know that Bozeman is growing, housing is booming and people want to live there. I guarantee if the proposal passes, that will all change. Bozeman will just be another California having to tax everyone until there is no one left to tax. Thank you for your time.
