HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-08-17 Public Comment - J. & K. Drake - SanctuaryGreetings, Mayor Taylor and Bozeman City Commissioners,
My wife and I are hardworking homeowners, taxpayers, and small business owners who work
hard to support the values and way of life that we so cherish about this state and our community.
We are very saddened by the news that the Bozeman Mayor and City Commission are
considering the idea of designating Bozeman as a sanctuary city.
This city is attempting to impose a sales tax on its residents because it claims this is needed to
fund a so-called underfunded city. Yet you have the funds to harbor illegal aliens and criminals
and offer them the same “strained” city services that its hardworking citizens must work hard for
today? How is this city going to pay for this? How are you going to address the issues we’re
already seeing: an increase in crime, graffiti, overcrowding, and housing crisis to name a few that
are plaguing this city?
Mayor Taylor has already spoken out publicly against President Trump’s promise to cut off
funding to sanctuary cities, saying that he doesn’t think the Trump administration can or will be
successful in doing so. However, if funds are cut, then that just leaves our community worse off.
Our biggest concern is for the safety of our children and what will happen to this community if
Bozeman becomes the first and only sanctuary city in the state. This city needs to focus on its
hardworking citizens and the problems plaguing this city before it can consider reaching out and
harboring criminals that can harm its citizens, the likes of which has happened in other sanctuary
cities.
We highly oppose this and will fight this effort in any way we can, particularly at the ballot box
if needed. If this gets enacted, we will have no choice but to leave this great city.
Kind Regards,
Jason & Kathy Drake
