Thank you for your service to our community.
We would respectfully ask you to not move forward on the sanctuary city agenda item that was
presented to you last night.
This issue is not only divisive at a time when everyone needs to take a deep breath, it is
something that does not even need to be considered.
First and foremost, constitutionally and legally the immigration authority is not in the peruse of
local and state government. It is given to the federal level and these laws are to be enforced.
Secondly, people are getting refugees and illegal immigration confused or lumping them all into
the same issue. The complexity of these issues, especially in light of national security and the
lack of access local and state levels have to the classified information makes it very risky for the
people of a particular area to make these decisions even if it was constitutional.
Thirdly, our community is already facing huge problems for people of lower incomes that are
citizens. Affordable Housing is unavailable, and even families that work full time jobs find it
increasingly difficult to provide basic needs due to the low wage base as well as cost of living
here. Your job is to fight to make our community one that provides this opportunity and truly
has safety nets and solutions for those who are stuck. Let's heal our community and make it
strong economically before we take on the problems of the world.
Finally, this agenda item if passed could also remove much needed funding from federal dollars
as a recourse for us ignoring federal law as well as not abiding by the constitutional authority
given to the president and congress. It would be akin to a neighborhood ignoring a city
ordinance because we decided we know better. It creates a crisis that can be easily avoided and
keeps order as all follow the law.
While acknowledging the well meaning feelings of those who came before you last night, we
certainly hope you will respect your rightful role and regardless of personal feelings about this
issue will uphold the constitution and the law by respectfully declining putting this on an agenda
because it is not within your sphere of influence or your legal responsibility. We expect nothing
less.
