Tree Advisory Board AppointmentCommission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Pearl Michalson, Deputy City Clerk Robin Crough, City Clerk SUBJECT: Appointment to the Bozeman Tree Advisory Board (BTAB) MEETING DATE: February 27, 2017 AGENDA TYPE: Action RECOMMENDED MOTION: I move to appoint one member to an existing term expiring June 30, 2017 on the Bozeman Tree Advisory Board. BACKGROUND: One term on the Bozeman Tree Advisory Board has a vacancy due to a resignation with an existing term of June 30, 2017 and there is one new applicant applying for the position. The Bozeman Tree Advisory Board is created under Ordinance No. 1364, adopted by the City Commission on April 26, 1993, as codified in Chapter 2.92 of the Bozeman Municipal Code. The Board is comprised of five members appointed by the City Commission, serving staggered two-year terms. Whenever possible, two of the members shall be from the following disciplines: real estate, commercial lending, civil or environmental engineering, or landscape architecture or construction. Members shall be residents of the City, own property within the City, or be gainfully employed within the City. The Board is advisory to the Commission, providing guidance and advice regarding the City's tree program and developing a proposed arboricultural specification manual and any needed revisions. Mr. Mason Shaffer has a background ornamental horticulture and landscape architecture, and is currently working in various backgrounds in relation to trees. The Bozeman Tree Advisory Board currently has one vacant term, and one new applicant. New Applicants: Mason Shaffer 390 ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Commission. Simply put, I am a creator. I offer this marketplace a unique set of talents with proficiencies in all things plants, garden design, landscape construction, landscape maintenance, 392 and natural systems all within the context of Montana (my native habitat). I have about six years of professional practice in the greater Bozeman area. I have a diverse portfolio of projects from mountain to urban settings, from small courtyards to large estates. Prior to calling Bozeman home, a highlight of my training included initial revival of the Almaty Botanical Garden (Almaty, Kazakhstan). I was part of a collaborative team charged with meaningful theme garden design and development that preserved the nature, culture, and history of the region. Additionally, I am the Founding Director of a grassroots non-profit organization that is determined to create Montana’s first world-class botanical garden. I am passionate about PLANTS (especially the rare, unusual, and those that receive unfair zonal discrimination), DESIGN (creative process), EDUCATION (specifically landscape design, horticulture, and the natural world), and all things MONTANA among other things.
