Sobo Lofts Mixed Use Building
For the Attention of Mayana Rice,
My home is right across the alley on the south side of the
proposed SOBO. When the Pizza Hut was in operation the alley
was a busy short-cut for drivers who wanted to head west,
(because of the one way nature of Babcock and no left turn from
7th onto Main Street). The exit from the alley onto 8th is tricky at
best...there is a downhill slope which is often a sheet of ice in the
winter, that has no clear sight line to see pedestrians on the side-
walk (which are frequent in this neighborhood) and then without
removing street parking is difficult to see cars moving both north
and south on 8th.
I don't believe an alley is ever designed to be used as a through
street, which it was in the past (Pizza Hut) and will be to a greater
extent in the future, unless some significant adjustments are
made.
I find it a sad irony that the SOBO proposal says that they plan to
leave the alley unsurfaced to maintain the "character" of the
neighborhood. I hope a better solution is forthcoming.
