E.Old Business
1. UFMP-EABAP
-Status update: Mitch explained the budget process and what stage we are at for approval by
Commission,which would be the end of June for the fiscal year 2017.The new full-time
position's budget is designed to start the beginning of the calendar year 2017. Plus 2
contractual services were included for half the year for$30K and to be used for cyclical pruning.
2. Rose Park interpretive signs
-Update on 8 species descriptions,sign construction:Jennifer is working on these in black&
white/pen&ink with the fun facts the board gave her. Black Hills spruce and Ponderosa pine 1
are the only two she needs to do yet. Four of the trees are from the Arbor Day grant.Mitch said
the course would be changing from 12 to 9 holes for the disc course and walked the park with 2
members of the Course of Discovery(the non-profit group)to mark the course.This is a multi-
year plan for this park and the disc course.
- Rebekah and Jennifer will go out to the park to review the plan for tree placement.
F.New Business
1.Arbor Day Celebration (Friday,June 3)
-Update on schedule,school involvement:Jennifer shared Amy Hanson's plan.Approximately �I
90 fourth graders from Emily Dickinson Elementary will there and be divided in 3 groups. I�
Beginning at 9:30,each class will have a tree to plant,holes will be pre-dug.The Scorpion will ?

be there for a demo.Staff will be explaining about the procedure to planting to the various
species being planted.The Water Conservation Staff will be there with some give-aways and
talk about water conservation.At 11:00,another group will come for a repeat of the first group.
-Advertising:Mitch explained that it was an educational event,and the discussion continued
on how to get the word out and how to describe it.
-Rebekah requested having the tree guards there for a teachable moment.
- Mitch encouraged anyone to come who was available then.
2. Ideas for the board's next"community engagement"project
-Patrick started the discussion about interactive map of trees for a walking route. Mitch
added that there was a project in the works already for an interactive trail map and that the
inventory of trees could be incorporated as well.
- Rebekah mentioned the City codes and updating them.Discussion continued about how the
code has been used recently,been questioned,how it can be used for new development,and
how important it would be to have it updated. Patrick asked how the process works to get it
changed,and Mitch explained that the changes would go to Commission for approval but would
require detailed analysis for review.As a board,this process would be a good opportunity to
become more familiar with the code.Mitch offered to talk to the City's code expert,Chris
Saunders,about the tree code.
3.Upcoming Board Member Term Expirations
-Bill Hoch said he would reapply and shared that Elisa would be moving in the fall so there
would be a vacancy to fill.
G.Discussion/Updates
-Mitch shared information about a Bozeman tree advocate Aida Murga,who has spearheaded work
with the school district to add trees,and has been working to add trees to the new Meadowlark
Elementary's boulevard along Ferguson.The board and the Meadowlark principal are supportive,but
the administration is not in favor of adding the trees.Mitch,Aida,and Vince Galli are scheduled to meet
with the school district tomorrow to try again to gain their support by explaining how the City can help
with 4 Cost Share trees. Patrick offered to be there as well to explain the benefits of planting more trees.
