Dear City Commission,
Dear members of the city commission,
On Tuesday I dropped my truck off at a tire shop on the east side of downtown and walked
five chilly blocks to my office on South Willson. When I reached the area of Bar IX, I lookeddown to see some vomit frozen on the sidewalk. I can't be sure, but a safe guess would be it
was evidence of someone's over consumption from the previous Monday night. That frozenvomit I stepped over this morning is eerily symbolic of why I oppose the Taproom's
application for a change of use permit to an all beverage license.
We all see the effects of alcohol. Our local restaurants and bars each promote alcoholconsumption differently. The Thursday "bucket night" at Bar IX attracts and creates a vastly
different environment than does a dinner with a bottle of wine at Blackbird.
The Taproom did a nice, upscale remodel on Rouse Avenue. I appreciate that it promotesitself as eco-conscious and family-friendly. Unfortunately there is no guarantee that model is
sustainable. Economics force adaptation. Restaurants and bars are among the most challengingbusinesses and strong or weak alcohol sales determine their success. Business partnerships
and their ownership often change. Restaurants and bars close and reopen their doors undernew names, operators and visions. There is no guarantee the Taproom, or any other
establishment serving alcohol directly across from a school or church, won't increase itsalcohol sales (and thus changing its environment) in order to succeed.
I don't want my three, or any other children that attend Hawthrone, to have to step over frozen
vomit on their way to school. I believe the approval of a full beverage license for theTaproom increases the odds of negative impacts on those students and thus the CUP should
not be approved by the city commission.
