Mr. Chris Mehl
Bozeman City Commission
121 N. Rouse
Bozeman, MT 59715
Dear Chris:You are the only Bozeman City Commission member I’ve had more than a casual conversation with so I am
venting to you.
As you may recall, my wife, Joanna, and I live in the 150 year old McDonald House, at 308 S. Tracy. We did a
foundation to roof remodel of our historic house in 2011, and were honored to receive two Bozeman Beautification
Awards- for the remodel and for our landscaping. We had a very good relationship with all the city departments we dealt
with and survived our dealings with the Historic Preservation Board.
I have neither read nor heard anything that indicates that the Historic Preservation Board has weighed in on the Black
Olive proposal. Seems strange if they haven’t, particularly in view of the profound effect it will have on the historic
districts.
Taylor, Andrus, Mehl, Pomeroy, Krauss, Naumann. West Harrison, Garden Brook, S. Willson, Greenway, Park Place,
South 10th Ave. How’s that for NIMBY. It looks as though you and the mayor are the only ones even within a mile of the
abomination proposed for Black and Olive. Potentially, the nearest any of you will have to get to it is the ribbon cutting
ceremony.
We happen to be a bit more than a block away, diagonally from the southwest corner of the Olive/Black property. The
parking in our neighborhood is already a horrendous mess. If, at any time, we go for a ten minute Heebs grocery run, the
parking spot in front of our home is filled by a downtown worker. It’s nuts around our neighborhood with the downtown
workers parking many days well into the 400 block of S. Tracy. Adding an additional 50 to 100 cars to this mess is
unconscionable. This problem alone should disqualify this project.
It is hard to believe that your commission wants to be remembered for its own Mandeville or SAE House fiasco by letting
some smooth-talking developer con you. This is giving a five story giant middle digit to the Historic Districts if this
project goes through.
There. I’ve vented. I would greatly appreciate it if you would vote against this misplaced abomination.
Yours truly,
Bob Nute
P.S. I saw the New Revised Edition picture of the building in the Chronicle. While a bit less HUD-like, the scale,
location and parking problems won’t go away.
