To the Bozeman City Commissioners:
I respectfully request that you deny a hard liquor license to the Bozeman Tap Room located at
the corner of Mendenhall and Rouse. It is my understanding that the Commission granted alicense to operate last year knowing that Hawthorne was closer than the 600-foot separation
mandated by state law because there haven't been problems from other nearby establishmentslike the Pour House. However, the rooftop space and open-air garage doors at the Tap Room
pose a uniquely visible and audible presence among drinkers and school children.
Proponents of the liquor license might argue that children are around drinking at home /restaurants / parties their parents take them to. However, a school setting is not a place where
the visible / audible presence of alcohol is expected. One of the norms of our society is thatschools provide a learning environment that is as safe and civilized as possible. Part of that
environment consists of the things children see and hear while at school. Thus the state lawmandates distances between schools and alcohol consumption.
I also support the recommendations suggested from the Hawthorne PAC:
1. Install dense screens on rooftop deck to block view of alcohol consumption during school
hours--including HAWKS afterschool program (11:00 am – 5:30 pm)
2. Keep all garage doors on Rouse closed during school hours (11:00 am – 5:30 pm)
3. No music on roof top deck or outside speakers during school hours (11:00 am – 5:30 pm)
4. Alcohol deliveries (kegs) must park and be delivered through front door on Mendenhall
5. Clean all sidewalks each night and each morning.
Thank you for your consideration and your service to our community.
