HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-14-16 Public Comment - R. Brown - Black OliveSirs, I attended the DRB meeting this past week and heard the question by the Board concerning the age of the structure at 200 S Black. I am 66 years old, grew up in Bozeman, remember that building, and did some research on it in the Polk's directories: It first appeared in the 1958 Polk's directory (Pp 163) with the address of 111 S. Black - kitty corner from where it now sits.It was moved sometime in 1964 to accommodate the new Federal Building. The owner, Dr, Melvin H. Hultgren was a chiropractor. This I remember clearly because moving a CMU (cinder block) building was quite a feat. In 1965 Dr. Hultgren is listed as having an office in that building now situated at 200 S Black. (Pp 144, Polk's 1965) That structure is at least 58 years old qualifying it for historic status. Aerial views or photos of Bozeman taken between 1958 and 1964 may further prove this information. The Building Department may have records of its move. FYI: Saunder's Dance studio sat on Babcock - the same city block - facing the Owenhouse shops and it was moved to the SE corner of 9th and Mendenhall. People moved buildings in those days retaining the embodied energy - unlike so many cases today. If you need any more information about this building, I would be glad to donate my time. Thank you for your time, Respectfully, Richard Brown 507 W Babcock
