The Black/Olive development proposal concerns me greatly. Already parents and employees have a very difficult time finding parking in this neighborhood. We have had parents miss parent teacher conferences, because they were 20 minutes late looking for parking. I supervise recess and serve as crossing guard at times. The traffic that increased on Tracy Ave from the Willson Ave construction seriously reduced the safety for students and families trying to cross. With 124 new residents only a few blocks down our street, I see that Tracy traffic could be permanently made as bad as at was during the Willson Ave project. I know of teachers and parents at Hawthorne who are very disappointed in the city's decision to approve a bar open in the afternoon right across the street from their school. Are we implying to parents that they basically need to save their parking spots at 1pm, and are being encouraged to hang out at the bar until the school bell rings? Thankfully we don't have THAT dilemma at Longfellow. But neighborhood safety around public schools should DEFINITELY be a priority when commissioners are considering building proposals!
